about

These are our songs from a split 7" with our friends Breakneck Static. For reasons out of our control we had to cancel our tour with them in celebration of this record, but such was the An Emergency way. We wanted to do it all, but somehow life would often fuck it up for us. Being based in Exeter often resulted in lengthy drives to get to play shows, being stuck in traffic for miles on end as we snaked our way out of the West Country. A memorably painful, and agonisingly long one, was on a Friday night to Southend, where upon arrival we played for a small handful of people. The most enthusiastic of which were members of Breakneck Static and our band-friendship was born. Brothers and sisters in obscurity and odd time signatures. These songs rank among my favourite we wrote, and we deliver them with confidence and force on this recording. Ben took the reins at the studio and pretty much told the engineer what to do, that's how I remember it anyway. Ben is not so sure of his assertiveness and claims that Rick "just had to press record and catch the lightening". Whatever, James Hetfield. We were fully in to our equal worship of Hot Snakes and Ex Models at this point and to me, these songs balance those influences quite nicely, whilst (to me, again) displaying the solidification of our own sound. We'd reached 'maturity' and were ready to leave home. This was the last couple of songs we wrote before we'd dive deep in to our first 'proper' album (although really it was our third, right?) where the ideas would become a bit loftier, and in retrospect this 7" captures the true essence of what I felt An Emergency was. Plus, the riffs are sick. ~ Dan, 2020

about

An Emergency Exeter, UK

An Emergency were a three-piece post-punk band from Exeter, England. Active 2003-2008. The group consisted of singer- guitarists, Ben Woodhouse and Dan Reeves, as well as drummer, Tom Drakett. The group’s breakneck-paced style of angular rock was indebted to the American punk and hardcore scenes of the 80s, 90s and early 2000s. Photo by Owen Richards. ... more
