about

This second batch of songs came quickly after the first record. A little bit more thought, a touch more sass and an unwavering commitment to the riff. I think we had a new rehearsal space (practicing at least once a week) by this point and were well entrenched in the Exeter scene that had spilled out from the Cavern in to house parties and ramshackle DIY gigs further afield. At every show we'd play, somebody would comment that our drummer Tom was "so amazing" and we shortly after nicknamed him the 'Illegal Talent'. He was amazing, but what about the guitars? We toured as much as we could whilst juggling work and family commitments. Part-time punks. Recording this with John Hannon was the perfect fit. John got our dumb humour and could hear cooler stuff in what we were doing than we knew. He gently suggested we embraced any shortcomings, accidents or weird stuff and the recordings are so much better for it. Having said this, the chops are undeniably tight. Those are our own. I think this is my favourite AE album. We slept at the studio and played Pro Evo (maybe it was FIFA) in to the night. Cold and dirty, he took pity on us and let us crash at his at least once. We were playing at the edge of our abilities and this resulted in some frayed nerves / arguments and even tears during the recording process. Ultimately we were stoked with what we got. We developed the 'Category 1' or 'Category 2' 'Hurricane' rating system for anything related to the band. We believed that people (ourselves included) were either rocked immediately, or would later realise they were rocked by the hurricane of An Emergency. No failures. We were idiots, but in our minds we were on some kind of Minutemen-esque lifer path of self-bettering punk fulfilment and it felt good. ~ Dan, 2020

about

An Emergency Exeter, UK

An Emergency were a three-piece post-punk band from Exeter, England. Active 2003-2008. The group consisted of singer- guitarists, Ben Woodhouse and Dan Reeves, as well as drummer, Tom Drakett. The group’s breakneck-paced style of angular rock was indebted to the American punk and hardcore scenes of the 80s, 90s and early 2000s. Photo by Owen Richards. ... more
